Hosteria Mandala is incredible! Maja and her staff are extremely responsive, professional, kind and courteous. We will always come back to Hosteria Mandala. Its the #1 Hosteria in the World!
I really loved and enjoyed my stay there. It is a peaceful place and really close to the beach. The staff is really friendly and helpful. I would definitely stay there again.
The rooms feel very private and I love the use of local resources. The vegetation around the rooms/cabins really give you a sense of being in nature, and the location is great with the beach across the street.
This is one of the most beautiful settings for a hotel on the coast that I have ever stayed at. The cabins, some 15 or so, are each uniquely designed and named after sea, land, and air creatures. Hidden in the forest along beautiful paths these cabins are comfortable, quiet, and relaxing. I stayed here in 2015 and today in 2022 the cabins and grounds are well maintained and the hosts are friendly and welcoming. I'll stay here again on my next visit to Puerto Lopez.
Beautiful, unique, scenic and interesting spot to spend a night or a week. Much to do on sight, and walking distance to the shops, restaurants and activities of the Malecon. Steps off the beach, with beautiful gardens, and many lovely surprises unique to the property. Homemade gelato, hand carved furniture and board games. Truly a magical place.
I loved the design and ambiance for consciousness. Owners and personnel strive to help and make your stay a pleasure. Great location.
The town of Puerto Lopez needs to work on cleaning the beach. Tons of plastic everywhere and too many dogs and of course dog waste. Locals should organize regular weekly “mingas” to clean the beach. If they don’t, it will soon turn into Atacamez.
Staying here was like sleeping in art. The owners’ artistic skills and attention to detail were amazing. It’s as though over the 24 years of building it they took every suggestion and made it a reality. Need a chair for the beach? They’ve got them. Want to play Chinese checkers? Choose the table with the inlaid wood game board on it…or backgammon…or checkers…or dominos from hand crafted wood. Look up and see the inlaid wood, down, the mortise and tenon workmanship…the carvings, the detail everywhere. Truly a work of art. The staff are equally attentive to the details of your needs and truly go above and beyond to do so. Can’t recommend it highly enough using Expedia’s scale.
Just spent 5 nights at Hosteria Mandala with a couple friends. I really enjoyed it. During my exploration of the town, I didn't see any other property that I would have rather stayed.
It is on the northern edge of the town\beachfront, but the town is not large enough for that to be a concern. It was at most a 15 minute walk to any place on the beach.
The property is broken into several small buildings with a few rooms per building. The buildings are surrounded by various plants and trees giving each room a secluded feeling. I believe each room has its own private outdoor space with hammocks and other seating. Because of the layout, I didn't have a clear ocean view, but the view of the plants made up for it. The beach is right out the front entrance of the property and since it is a little off from the main drag, the beach seems very private.
We saw several iguanas, hummingbirds, and other wildlife on the property.
The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The included breakfast was more than adequate with 3 different options.
I highly recommend this property.

Liked: Cleanliness, staff & service
Bedding and shower were clean. The garden is well-maintained and lots of birds. But the buildings/cabins need repair work. Hot water came and went every three minutes, had to jump in and out of the water flow. Curtains were faded and wrinkled, the walls were cracked and stained, MANY doors did not hang true and were therefore hard to lock. In the common areas, the games and books and instruments are old and faded, appear to be unused.… In fact, I did not see anyone use the common areas other than for breakfast. Breakfast was plentiful but boring…salt was damp/unusable. The staff was very pleasant but not very knowledgeable about local attractions/guides. The two doggies were friendly and well behaved, not dirty at all. Overall, I felt safe and clean. I think with minimal investment this place could be awesome.
Very very clean rooms A little rustic for some but the overall stay was extremely friendly. So close to the ocean is a plus. Some may be turned off by no AC but the open air windows and fans provide plenty of cooling
Lovely, friendly, helpful staff. Rustic cabins, surrounded by greenery, birds, and art.
It felt very safe staying at Hosteria Mandala. Easy walk into the central town either on the beach or Malecon.
It is a very pleasant theme but it isn't for everyone. This type of location is naturally inviting for bugs and this kept me up at night. Room was also a little small so it was difficult to get settled in. But mainly my complaint is the bugs. I just couldn't get used to this.
