This property is a room in a converted basement The steep stairs going down to the room would not be good for those with mobility issues. The foliage has not been trimmed and so the view is obstructed. There is smoking allowed on the property and the smoking drifted into our room and triggered my husband’s asthma. We felt this room was overpriced and the website is misleading when it is called a “lodge.”

On arrival, these guests, David and Heather did not look very happy. Happy people love the Tarltons Lodge experience. Most guests come to Tarltons Lodge for the breathtaking ocean view and their own private spa, neither of which were mentioned in this demeaning review. Their remarks are distorted and, in some cases, untrue. There is no basement at Tarltons Lodge. Our rooms are on the first floor overlooking the ocean. The stairs are built to code, each with handrails for safety. Smoking is not allowed on the property except in a designated area, at the front of the house facing the parking and road, where the smoke cannot drift into the guest rooms. These guests stayed with us at the height of the summer season, when you have to book early to reserve a room and guests line up to rent our rooms. In any holiday destination in the world, you won’t get a breathtaking ocean view with your own private spa without paying a little extra. Our prices are on par with the other Bay of Islands, ocean-view waterfront properties.Our goal is Happy Guests.

The host and hostess were great. It is important for guests to know these rooms are converted basement or lower floor rooms of a home. We felt the listing was misleading when it was called a “lodge.“ The bathroom lacked a few amenities as in enough shampoo and conditioner for two people and it would’ve been nice to have lotions provided. We would have appreciated an iron. An issue for us was cigarette smoking that was allowed on the property. My husband’s asthma was triggered from the cigarette smoking that was allowed in the front of the house which drifted into our room and caused us a problem. There are narrow stairs that lead down to the room and would be difficult for some who may have mobility issues. There is a trip hazard in the bathroom which the host pointed out to us. That needs to be remedied.

Great stay. Owners are lovely, property immaculate and really private. Very close to Paihia township, I would by far prefer to stay here than at one of the many motels/hotels in Paihia.

The stay was incredible, and the view is just amazing. The service provided by the lodge is of top-level.!! It's a place to stay whenever in Paihia.

Idyllic setting for time out
Tarlton’s Lodge is the ideal prescription for stress management. From the tranquil water views towards Russell, the quiet interrupted only by birdsong, to the comfort of a well appointed room complete with private spa pool on the deck, the setting is just so relaxing. Add in the generosity and friendliness of the hosts and a fresh, bountiful breakfast served on your balcony every morning...it’s the perfect package. If you want to eat out, be sure to take the ferry to Russell, a 10-15 min walk from the Lodge. Compared to what is on offer at Paihia, our experience was that the fare in Russell was just so much better...try The Gables, The Duke of Marlborough, Hone’s Kitchen, you won’t be disappointed.

We were celebrating our 30th wedding annIversary and Tarltons Lodge met all our criteria and more. The room was homely and spotless. The view was stunning. It is away from the main road so you have the peace and quite, but only a 10 minute walk to the major areas. Our hosts Peter and Katalina were very friendly and helpful. My husband and I highly recommend Tarltons Lodge.

We had a lovely stay with Peter and Katalina. The room was large with a comfy bed. We were pleased that there were 2 arm chairs as so many hotels only have one chair! The outdoor spa tub was heaven after a long day playing tourist. The breakfast on our patio was a great way to start the day especially Katalina's omelette! Lastly the view - WOW just beautiful! A stay here is highly recommended!
Waking yup in paradise, Was definitely what we got! We had absolutely stunning views from our room, From in the room to the spa the views made it extra special not to mention the lovely breakfast watching the sunrise, PRICELESS. The room was so spacious and spotlessly clean. The family looking after us were so lovely.

Gorgeous view overlooking the bay
We had a fantastic stay at Tarlton's Lodge! The pictures describe it perfectly; luxury accommodation with a gorgeous view overlooking the bay, and delicious breakfast of your choosing every morning. Great room, amazing view, walking distance
Owners were extremely friendly and helpful. Our room had an amazing view of the water. It's a short (15 minute) walk to town (but is uphill all the way back). The food was great. The room was well equipped. We only used the a/v system for displaying camera images on the TV so I can't really comment further on that. The double sliding glass door allowed us to open the room to the covered porch and enjoy the breeze and sound of the water. The private hot tub was also great!

Excellence in the beautiful Bay of Islands
Amazing views overlooking Bay of Islands. Very friendly, knowledgable, helpful staff. Great room with private spa overlooking the Bay. Walking distance, although steep hill to shops, restaurants (amazing choices), didn't use my car the whole time that staying there. Breakfast provided was excellent. So many activity choices.

Located and sort walk to Paihia, all rooms offer fantastic views. The hosts offer great suggestions for local restaurants as well as the various activities around the Bay of Islands. We had a great 2 days and are still working off the breakfasts!!

Beautiful view of the bay
We spent three days at Tarlton's Lodge and couldn't be happier with our choice. If you want a peaceful setting, a beautiful view of the bay, a private hot tub and breakfast on your private patio, do yourself a favor and stay here. Peter and Kathalena are wonderful and attentive hosts.

I booked 2 nights to attend a work conference while my husband caught up with his paper work, in the room, during the day. The owners were great. They seemed as if they would do anything for us but were just as happy to give us our privacy. Could not have picked a better place. Awesome views, quiet and private. A real treat. The breakfast was very tasty, beautifully presented and hot! and it was served at exactly the time we requested. This property is not on the "water front" of Paihea and therefore not within walking distance of the Bars and Restaurants BUT this means it IS private, quiet and secluded.

Friendly and very helpful hosts. We had a great time, especially the spa at the end of the day to wind down. Breakfast just right outside our room overlooking the bay just topped our trip. Look forward to staying here again next time we up there again.

hidden up a small road this is a beautiful bed and breakfast run by two happy , knowledgeable and extremely helpful people, it is a 1 minute drive from bustling Pathia The views from each of the 3 rooms are stunning , lying in bed you can watch the passing fishing boats .Each room has a hot tub to relax and take in the sun sets at the end of the day and to avoid the crowds in town. Breakfast is set up on your veranda, cooked to order and served when you are ready. This is a new looking property and wonderfully run by Tash and Dan.

A great place to start and end the day
From the moment we arrived we could not have been made to feel more welcome, Dan & Natasha were great hosts. The room was of a good size with a nice big bed and two comfortable leather relaxer chairs, all facing big glass doors looking out over one of the inlets of the bay and the decking with our own hot tub. Breakfast was served to our own table on the deck, and when we had an early start a cold breakfast was put in to our fridge the previous evening. A lovely place with lovely, helpful, people.

Wonderful Stay In The Bay Of Islands
This was to be our indulgence and it did not disappoint. Our room was well appointed, the bathroom modern, the views were devine. We decompressed each night in the hot tub overlooking the Bay of Islands. The hosts are friendly with helpful suggestions for day trips. Exquisite breakfasts were served on the room's patio with the same outstanding view.

Beautiful view of bay and islands from all rooms. Spacious lanai with large jacuzzi to go with the views. Natasha and Dan were great hosts and served very delicious breakfasts. Nice quiet location just down the road from a great little town. Nice area of New Zealand with nice golf courses nearby.

Fabulous, I actually drove to bay of Islands to take a sailing adventure but it ended up being canceled, but it was totally was worth the trip just for the stay. Natasha and Dan are wonderful hosts very nice and fun to talk to, and Natasha makes the best breakfast in all of New Zealand!!!

Perspective Shifting Experience
I was little apprehensive to stay at a B&B initially, the idea of a shared communal space with strangers and staying in somebodies home really put me off, but, with alot of nagging from my wife I conceded to "not knock until you try it". We booked through Expedia which was pretty seamless and easy and within 24 hours had received an email from Tash & Dan thanking us for booking and asking when we thought we would be arriving to ensure everything was setup for us, I was a little wowed right from there. We arrived in Paihia 2 hours before check-in and we rang to see if there was a small chance we could (at the very least) drop our luggage off if we had to explore for an hour or two, Dan answered when we rang, and told me "hey not a problem at all we'll see you and Carmen soon Nick" all I'd said was "Hi we're due to check-in at 3 under <last name>". This is the second signal that we were staying with people that consider their guest experience paramount to their business, colour me impressed. The room itself was very very clean, the decor wasn't weathered or old, breakfast was superb each morning with Tash going the extra mile to combine elements from the multiple options they offer in order to cater to my fussy wife. The views are spectacular and I really can't stress enough how absolutely nothing was an issue for our lovely hosts. If you're like me and you've never experienced a B&B before then stay with Dan & Natasha, it's private and spectacular value. We'll be back
