Visit the National Museum of Natural History to view fascinating collections set among high vaulted ceilings and gothic arches. This historic stone-and-marble building dates back to the 1800s.
Walk through the old science lab. Take a look at the original 19th-century equipment to appreciate how far technology has evolved. This lab isn’t a reconstruction, but a preserved working laboratory from the research that was once done here. The building belongs to the University of Lisbon.
While you are on the first floor, head to the dinosaur exhibit, one of the most popular displays in the building. There’s a full-sized skeleton among the artifacts on display.
Upstairs there’s a hands-on room with physics experiments that’s good for older kids and teenagers. It has a written guide to help explain each experiment. There’s also a room with math games. Both areas are manned by helpful attendants who speak English.
Wander throughout the museum and explore wildlife photography, models of the planets and extensive collections of insects and fossils.
This museum is still part of the University of Lisbon and has a long research history that continues today. There are more than 1,692 human skeletons dating back to the 1800s that are being documented.
The Botanical Gardens are next door. When you are ready to take a break, go outside to enjoy the old-world garden and views of the historic area of Belem.
The National Museum of Natural History is located at the University of Lisbon campus in the Principe Real district. Get here by bus or walk from other attractions in the city centre. The museum is open daily except Monday. Admission is free.
