Warning other travellers about this hotel - unless you absolutely have no other place to stay in Mumbai, avoid booking you stay at Hotel Al-Madina. It is situated in the filthiest part of the city, very narrow lane where taxis can't go, no elevator access to L1 (Reception), cockroaches and lizards in the room + toilets, extremely rude owner. I booked this hotel for 2 nights and had to leave within 2 hours of check-in. The hotel charged me for AC even though the rooms are listed as AC rooms.
The room had cockroaches. I found a lizzard crawling in the hallway. The first room I was shown the ceiling was falling apart from water damage. This hotel needs to be removed from listing.
Booked online thinking it was closer to the fort area and colaba. Unfortunately it wasn't, and no taxis ever knew where the place was, which became really quite annoying after a while. It was about 5km to colaba, and the traffic (as you'd expect) was always dreadful. Me and my wife wanted a hotel close to the touristy places, but instead it was down a dirty street alley away from everything.
The hotel itself was full of damp. Paint falling from most walls. After one night in our room, even the sheets began feeling damp. Watch out for insecure windows too...ours had no lock and could have been easily been accessed if someone so wished. The wifi worked in our room for just 1 of the 3 days- had to sit in tiny reception room to use Internet.
The guys at the hotel were great and really friendly, and is probably the only reason I wouldn't score it a 1. The place needs a major overhaul, and closer to the action in my opinion
I have stayed in 15 hotels so far in India, all basic in the price range, £5 - £15, and have been pleasantly surprised. Until I came here. This dump in the middle of a squalid, filthy ghetto, was truly unpleasant. Again I have stayed in a number of poverty stricken areas which whilst difficult to take in are unthreatening and have their own charm, but this was just unpleasant. So if you like to share your room with cockroaches, (yes they were there), and walk home at night, or during the day for that matter, past people lying at the side of the street chasing the dragon then go ahead book....
