Relax in a landscaped park in the heart of San Juan, a scenic space decorated with art installations, fountains and open-air concert venues.
One of the best places to take a break while sightseeing in Old San Juan is Luis Muñoz Rivera Park. This shaded, peaceful spot is located just west of popular Escambrón Beach and minutes away from the Capitol building. Stroll along 27 acres (11 hectares) of pathways and pause to rest by fountains and near many of the park’s unusual sights. Old San Juan and the neighboring district of Puerta de Tierra are easy to explore on foot.
The park was built in the first half of the 20th century to honor the Puerto Rican statesman of the same name. Search through the site to find a statue of the popular figure, as well as sculptures of other Latin American figures lining the Walkway of Heroes.
The unconventional park features multiple sights within its boundaries. Pause at the sign at the entrance to the park to review a map of the area. Make sure you see the San Geronimo Powderhouse, an 18th-century fortification that houses a replica Liberty Bell.
Wander through the park area, which is immaculately laid out around fountains, plant beds and murals. Stop by the Pavilion of Peace, an occasional concert venue at different times of the year. Benches line the shaded pathways, making it an ideal place to relax and watch other visitors roaming the park.
Cyclists can enjoy following the bike paths that run through the park, linking to the nearby Third Millennium Park. Kids can release some energy in the popular play area.
Bring your camera for photos beneath the picturesque pavilion or near the central fountain. The park also features a miniature forest near the Supreme Court building.
Luis Muñoz Rivera Park is located within walking distance of several other San Juan highlights, including Escambrón Beach and Castillo de San Cristobal. Use the metered parking near the beach and then explore the area on foot. Entry to the park is free and it is open throughout the year.
