This guest put our hotel in an impossible position. They went to our unattended bar, ignored 2 signs stating that the bar was off limits and that they should see a front desk person for a drink, and poured themselves an alcoholic drink. We actually saw the guest doing so on our CC TV. This action violates Massachusetts law, puts our liquor license at risk and jeopardizes our ability to do business, and put us in the impossible position of either confronting the guest or calling the police. Our Executive Manager approached the guest in a respectful but firm manner and the guest responded, not with an apology, but with anger. We do not believe any hotel or bar in the country would take kindly to guests helping themselves to drinks from their bar -- it would be considered theft. Our ethos is kindness and our team takes this very seriously, going out of their way to show kindness and generosity to all our guests and ensuring our guests have a great stay with us. We have never had guests behave in this manner and it is demoralizing to get a negative review for no fault of ours. Bottom line: We were put in an impossible situation and handled it as professionally as possible.

We're so sorry the decor was not to your taste. We have a plan to upgrade our rooms soon. We'll certainly look at the lighting issue. As to the bed, we assure you it is a standard-sized queen. You are right about the sofa, we would have loved a bigger sofa in the room — and we did try to get something bigger in the room. Unfortunately, that is the biggest pull-out couch we could fit up our 120-year-old stairs and doorways. Our hope is that the kindness and generosity of our team, our amenities, the beauty of the location and the charm of the building make up for some of its quirks.

All feedback is valuable and valued, but this is not our typical feedback. With thousands of reviews posted across multiple sites, we average 4.9 stars out of 5. This review does not seem to consider our complimentary gourmet breakfast; our outstanding and complimentary amenities; our “5-Star” customer service; our spectacular views; nor our access to a pristine lake with complimentary kayaks and paddleboards. It is also disheartening to us to read this AFTER you have checked out, as you mentioned neither of these issues during your stay, so we had no chance to address your issues. (We pride ourselves on our superb service, and consider the measure of a great business not just how many problems crop up – but how the business addresses said problems).To the specific points you bring up: we aim for complete transparency with guests. We post multiple pics of every single room on our website, so pics of the bathroom in your room are widely available in advance of booking. As to road noise, we are set back nearly 50 yards from the road, further than the vast majority of inns and hotels, and the road itself is generally very quiet after 6 pm or so. Also, in the time we have operated the inn, this is the first complaint we have had about road noise. Again, we so wish you had reached out to us during your stay as a simple room move would have provided you with more suitable quarters.
