Kungsbacka

Travel Guide

A red wooden cabin on a rocky shore with a calm lake reflecting the sky and a distant person standing on a pier.
A coastal town at dusk with illuminated houses and boats docked in calm waters.
A wooden pier extending into calm water at sunset with a lighthouse in the background.
A lush green landscape with a clear blue sky, a forested area, and distant fields.
A church with a tower, surrounded by trees and a field.

In the far north of the county of Halland a blend of energetic outdoor activities and romantic rural Sweden from the 19th century meet in Kungsbacka.

A holiday in Kungsbacka will give you a serene and relaxed trip to idyllic Swedish nature and old fashioned romance from a time when it belonged to Denmark. Enjoy gorgeous views, a spell binding castle and rural history from the 19th century.

Kungsbacka started its long history as one of Denmark’s smallest and most northerly border towns. When it became Swedish the appeal of Kungsbacka was enhanced by its vicinity to big city Gothenburg, and it remained a small town with heaps of character that can still be felt today.

Much of the old town of Kungsbacka was ruined in the fire of 1846, but a stone’s throw from the cobbled central square you can still admire the old cottage Roda Stugan. Have a cup of coffee or tea at the old jeweller's workshop, which is a surprising contribution to the picture of modern buildings and Asian restaurants. Take a walk down to Ostergatan to view the old Mayor's Residence, which is a cultural treasure in the middle of Kungsbacka.

On the hill Toloberg you find Kungsbacka's first water tower, which was finished in 1897. Climb the 179steps to the top and enjoy the view. If you would like a retreat to the countryside, you can go to Askhults By just outside the town. Here you find yourself in a village from the 19th century where you feel like time has stopped.

Awe inspiring Tjoloholms Castle was completed in 1904 and has been called one of Sweden's most curious buildings. In the middle of the Swedish countryside you encounter this extravagant English renaissance castle, complete with a park and original interiors from Liberty department store in London.

If you're not interested in seeing English castles in Sweden, you can spend your weekend in Kungsbacka playing golf, hiking forests and visiting beaches. Nature lovers will also appreciate Fjaras Bracka, an impressive glacial ridge stretching 60metres above sea level and offering a wonderful view out to sea as well as opportunities for walks, fishing and wild swimming.

Kungsbacka offers its visitors a lovely place to stay with long walks, views of the sea and 19th century beauty in the accessible south west of Sweden. Gothenburg is only 20minutes away by train.

Great for us, but not if you were too picky!
"Perfect for what we wanted as a couple with a 3 year old. We didn’t have high expectations, so all good. The cabin was a bit tired and worn and was boiling hot. Shower good and ice box was large. Play park not brilliant and a bit noisy at night!!"
