Admire the glorious vista of the surrounding forested hills and the sparkling bay from this concrete lookout above the beach.

With a vista of the stunning coastline adorning the outskirts of Búzios, the João Fernandes Viewpoint is among the most scenic spots in the region. It features a sturdy concrete deck overlooking the viewpoint’s namesake beach, with boats and an island filling the background. Capture photos of the green and blue hues of the calm ocean water at João Fernandes Beach.

Bring your binoculars and lean over the whitewashed walls of the quaint belvedere structure for the best views. Inspect the jumble of colorful and artistic graffiti that sometimes covers the walls. Rolling green terrain surrounds the viewpoint on all sides, before reaching the Atlantic Ocean. Bring food and drink to have a picnic on the terrace or an adjacent hill while you enjoy the spectacular vista.

Note that the bay at this location resembles a lagoon because of its stillness and transparency. You can even make out the intriguing rock formations that lie beneath the ocean surface. In the distance, spot the Ilha Branca landmass, which is pockmarked by brushes of green vegetation. Gaze out at the range of colorful speedboats, schooners and fishing boats dotted around the bay.

Stay overnight at one of the hotels and inns that adorn the emerald hills overlooking the bay. Make your way down from the viewpoint to João Fernandes Beach and dine at one of the many restaurants and bars. Rent kayaks and boards for surfing or stand-up paddling.

Note that a popular wooden terrace known as the João Fernandes Lookout stands nearer the beach and also offers wonderful views of the bay.

The João Fernandes Viewpoint is tucked in the northeastern corner of the promontory containing Búzios. Drive northeast from the town center of Búzios for 2 miles (3 kilometers) to get here in about 10 minutes. Leave your car in the parking lot for free.

Visit some of the nearby sights, including Azedinha Beach, Azeda Beach and Sant’Anna Church.
