Sip cocktails or savour Italian cuisine while you enjoy panoramic views of the city from this skyscraper’s observation deck.

The Italia Building (Edifício Itália) attracts visitors for its breathtaking views of the industrious São Paulo skyline. Delight in its striking architecture from around the city or climb to its observation deck and spot some of downtown’s more iconic landmarks.

Built between 1956 and 1965, the Edifício Itália bears the glass-and-steel hallmarks of its architect, Franz Heep. At around 550 feet (168 metres) high, made up of 46 stories, this skyscraper is the second-tallest construction in Brazil. From the streets around its lobby admire its curved exterior stretching toward the clouds.

For the best views of the city, take the building’s two elevators to its observation deck. The 46th floor features glass windows on all sides, providing 360-degree views of São Paulo’s skyline. Look for such recognizable buildings as the Mirante do Vale, the city’s tallest skyscraper, and the sturdy-looking City Hall. The observation deck is best visited on sunny days when you can see for miles.

Just below, on the 41st floor, an Italian restaurant serves authentic cuisine complemented with outstanding views. Spend an hour or two savouring bruschetta or Bolognese pasta while enjoying an unbeatable vista. As the sun begins to set, head to the bar and try a sweet cocktail. Though slightly pricy, just one drink will buy you enough time to follow the sun sinking into the horizon.

After dark, head to the cigar lounge or the piano bar, on the floor above, and see a live music performance. The city is particularly pretty at night when many skyscrapers are illuminated by giant spotlights. Be sure to check before you enter since the bar may charge a fee for admission.

The Edifício Itália is located in central São Paulo. It is open from midday to late daily, year-round. Best visiting hours are on weekdays when there are no entry fees and crowds are sparse. Be sure to wear closed shoes to the observation deck as a dress code applies. The building is wheelchair accessible.
