Gerringong is a relaxed seaside town in New South Wales’ gorgeous Illawarra region. The town sits behind a picturesque coastline that stretches across wide, sandy beaches and pretty headlands. Enjoy views of the surrounding rolling green hills and vineyard-laden valleys that rise into the mountainous Illawarra Escarpment to the west of the town.
Explore Gerringong’s town centre on foot and find a collection of local shops and specialty stores selling regional produce, including fine cheeses and wines. Pick up some snacks for a picnic and head to Boat Harbour Reserve, where you can enjoy the barbecue facilities, a safe sea pool and gorgeous ocean views. Bring the kids to explore the rocky outcrop. Learn about the town’s history at the Gerringong History Museum and see more than a dozen Gerringong heritage locations on a pleasant walk using a map from the Kiama Visitor Centre.
Visit Werri Beach to the north of Gerringong and surf the headland breaks or enjoy a refreshing swim in the lifeguard-patrolled shallows and sea pools. In nearby Gerroa, to the south, visit Seven Mile Beach for more great surf conditions and a wide, sandy foreshore. Lifeguards patrol this beach during summer. From here, explore some of the Coastal Trail that connects Gerringong to Kiama. Try sea fishing at either of these beaches or join a fishing charter trip.
Take a trip to Gerringong’s verdant rural area and find wineries and beautiful hillside views. Crooked River is a lush area with a reserve and a winery. Play golf at one of seven golf courses near to Gerrigong. Explore the beautiful countryside on horseback or by bike.
Gerringong is less than a 2-hour drive from Sydney. Reach the town’s railway station from Sydney via the South Coast Line with a connection in Kiama. Summers are warm and winters are mild in this pretty seaside town. Visit in spring for drier weather and beautiful wildflowers.
