It is a beautiful place for long walks including some Levada (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Levada), incredible works of engineering to transport water to the south of the island - there are over 1,350 miles of Levada on Madeira! Buses run from Funchal. We went on a guided walk and benefited from fascinating insights into the history and life in the park.
