Freising

Travel Guide

Take acity trip to Freising, a university and cathedral town rich in tradition and situated just 30km north of Munich on the River Isar.

It is the well conserved old town in the centre of Freising that will impress you above all else. The resplendent town houses and historic buildings give visitors on a trip to Freising a taste of how the 1,300-year-old town looked in the Early Middle Ages. A short trip to the Municipal Museum, which is housed in part of the old episcopal university, is an absolute must for history buffs. In the exhibition rooms, which were completed in 2007, the rich history of the cathedral town is explained in an exciting way. A visit to the twice-weekly market at Marienplatz also comes highly recommended during a mini-break in Freising. On offer here are regional products and flowers as well as fruit and vegetables. This gives you the chance during your city trip to experience a little bit of authentic life in the Bavarian town of Freising.

The St. Mary and Corbinian Cathedral is usually shortened to Mariendom (St. Mary's Cathedral) by the locals. It is the co-cathedral of the archdiocese of Freising and Munich. In the year 715 the precursory church was planted on the hill in the middle of the town centre. For visitors to the church during a city trip to Freising, the cathedral tour is of particular interest, as it explains in detail the highlights of the church, the famous frescoes and the Romanesque crypt with its Bestiensäulen (pillar of beasts) sculpture. It is also possible to visit the Renaissance courtyard and the royal corridor on an extended tour.

The Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan (Weihenstephan Bavarian State Brewery) is perched on top of Weihenstephan hill and ranks amongst some of the oldest breweries in the world. Beer was first produced here in 1040. The brewery is located in the buildings of the former Weihenstephan monastery in the Weihenstephan district. On a tour you can wander through the brewery and take a look behind the scenes of beer brewing. The tour starts in the brewery’s museum and proceeds to show you the secrets of the art of Bavarian brewing. At the end you can do a tasting to try the traditional beer for yourself.

The Weihenstephan Gardens are also located atop Weihenstephan hill. The former monastery gardens are laid out like a park and are worth a visit at any time of year to see the plants in the different seasons. Visit the centuries-old trees and the trial garden (Sichtungsgarten) with a variety of elaborate shrubs and flower beds. Tours are also available here these are an excellent way to experience the gardens from another perspective.

Lovely delightful town, commuting distance to Munich on the regional train service. There are plenty of places to eat or stop for a coffee. Lovely gardens at the university and really nice polite people.
