Great place to stay
We’ve traveled New Zealand for three weeks. This hotel is by far the most realistic from pictures on their site. Staff is SO friendly and helpful, just awesome. Be sure to do the glow worm walk! We’d definitely stay again.

The room as such was comfortable. We had to ask for more coffee and milk sachets as only 2 were provided for 2 people and 2 nights. The walls are very thin, we heard snoring from both sides. We had to close the currains into the garden, great mountain view, as both neighbours kept walking about in front of our bedroom looking in. Comfortable bed.

Perfect sleep in Fox Glacier
Perfect location on the way to Lake Mathison and the views of Fox glacier. Room was clean and well stocked. Comfortable bed. Friendly and helpful staff. Close to restaurants and could have walked there if not cold/raining. Nothing fancy but perfect for a restful night of sleep

Fantastic location,enjoy your breakfast outside whilst soaking up the serenity. Excellent value for money in the clean and modern facilities. Restaurant close by if needed.

Awesome stay
We planned to stay again in this motel, after our last wonderful experience. The room we got had Queen bed, single bed and sofa. The room was big, spacious, cleaned, comfy beds with nice and clean bathroom (toilet & shower). The other amenities in room were TV, microwave, fridge, electric cooktop and heater. The views from the motel is great (mountains & glacier), close to restaurants, stores and Lake Matheson, parking in front of your room. Overall a good experience staying in the motel with no complaints, humble host and plus cheap deal.

Affordable, clean tidy and quiet BUT IT WASN'T ideal being "confronted" it felt like, with the owner's mother (as she could NOT communicate in English) and instead shoved a cell phone in my face while wondering what she was expecting me to do with it? followed by pointing at a piece of paper with names on it showing our booking, at which time finally a person spoke on the cell phone in English (Turned out to be the son/owner) making reference to me wiht saying "my mum will show you where to go" He sounded pleasant, but wasn't ideal - when not knowing what was expected/ going on but once he explained it became clearer asking if I was checking in..... Please always have someone manning the front counter, who is able to speak English!

Good value for the price. The room had some strange odour (like a farm?) when you walked in but looked clean — kind of not noticing the smell much after some time; low water pressure, hard to get a hot/ colder water balance for the shower. Pillows were not comfortable for my liking.

The location is perfect, close enough to the village and also close enough to Lake Matheson...all within walkable distances. The room was a good size and comfortable. The curtains kept the light out so much we missed sunrise (but were not worried). The only thing that was a bit annoying was the drain in the wetfloor in the bathroom was a bit of a hazard especially in the dark.

To be honest we were somewhat disappointed with Sunset Motel. The fridge in our room was broken, the thermostat didn’t work and they were obviously aware of this as it was unplugged when we arrived. We plugged it in with the consequence that everything in it froze!! The young man on reception gave lip service but I believe the next person to stay will experience a similar problem. There was also a problem with drinking water in the village and there were many signs stating that all water needed to be boiled before use. There were no signs displayed or information given about this at the motel.
