Located on the border of the Canadian prairies and foothills, Calgary is an entry point for the Rocky Mountains and the ski resorts of Banff and Jasper but still a charming destination in its own right.
As the gateway to the ski resorts of the Rockies, winter is usually high season for travel to Calgary. But you shouldn’t overlook the city itself. The largest city in Alberta, this cowboy town is also a great summer destination, with rodeos and Western culture pervading in the summer months.
If you’re travelling during the ski season, it pays to try and book early as it can get busy. But, even during the winter months, you can find cheap flights to Calgary using Expedia.
Calgary International Airport is located about 11 miles from the northeast of the city. It’s the busiest airport in the province of Alberta, handling around 16 million passengers a year and providing direct flights to Europe, North America, South America and Asia.
Downtown Calgary is quite compact and easily explored on foot. If you’re exploring a little further afield, there are good bus and rail options in and around the city. The C-Train runs frequently around the city and you can ride up to 14 blocks for free. Buses are less frequent and mostly used for commuting but can still be useful for tourists.
Canada’s third largest Chinatown is in the city and a great place to go and eat. You can spend hours exploring the peaceful Prince’s Island Park, home to two of the largest annual festivals in the city, the Folk Music Festival and Carifest. For the best views in the city, head to the top of the Calgary Tower.
