Fishermen's Museum

Fishermen\'s Museum showing interior views
Delve into the seafaring past of Hastings at this maritime museum, which pays tribute to the local fishing industry and community.

Housed in a former church, the Fishermen’s Museum is devoted to preserving the history of Hastings’ fishing industry. See an assortment of all things maritime-related displayed here, including nets, paintings, old model boats and even a real lugger, a traditional fishing vessel that was frequently used on expeditions from Hastings.

Learn about the fascinating seafaring history of the town and the fishermen who trawled the nearby coast. The museum was set up by locals in 1956, though the church it is housed in dates back even earlier. The church, which served the local fishing community, was constructed in the mid-19th century. Having fallen out of use after World War II, it was repurposed to house this museum.

Head inside to discover more about the maritime history of Hastings. Stand on the deck of the Enterprise, one of the last luggers found in Hastings. This boat dates back to 1912 and is a typical example of the type of boats that were part of the local fishing fleet prior to World War I.

To see more modern examples of fishing boats, stop at the net hut next door. This black wooden structure is just one of many net huts on the Hastings shoreline, which were used as storehouses for fishing gear. Venture into the museum-owned net hut to view the Edward and Mary, one of the first local boats to be installed with an engine, and the Valiant, a 1950s fishing vessel that was active until 1999.

The exhibits inside trace the history and development of the fishing industry. Inspect the items displayed, which range from old photographs and paintings to fishing equipment. Examine the old nets and ropes, which were used to haul in the day’s catch.

Find the Fishermen’s Museum near the Stade on the Hastings seafront. The museum is open daily, except on Christmas Day. It’s run by the Fishermen's Protection Society and the Old Hastings Preservation Society. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. Park in a public lot behind the museum.
