Northwestern Lapland is contained within the sparsely populated municipality of Enontekiö. Experienced hikers, ramblers and nature lovers will find plenty to see and do here. Enontekiö includes the highest point in Finland, Haltitunturi, and the northernmost part of Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. Explore the magnificent wildernesses of Fell Lapland.
Enontekiö contains 26 villages, many with few inhabitants. At its centre is Hetta, with a population of 800 and Enontekiö's only ATM. Lying on the banks of Lake Ounasjärvi, Hetta is an excellent starting point for exploring the mountain streams and hiking trails of Northwestern Lapland.
The area offers excellent sporting opportunities in winter and hiking trails in summer. Near the village of Hetta is Hetta Hiihtomaa, where you can enjoy downhill or cross-country skiing and snowshoe trails. Admire the enchanting mountain scenery from the Jyppyrä vantage point, with impressive views over the fells of Pallas-Ounastunturi.
The route to Jyppyrä leaves from Fell Lapland Visitor Centre, so you can combine culture and scenery in the same trip. The permanent exhibitions at the Visitor Centre include information on nomadic culture and Lapland's eight seasons. Discover Enontekiö's natural attractions and choose the places you most want to visit. You can also purchase fishing, hunting and off-road vehicle permits, and reserve a wilderness hut.
Have an unforgettable and inexpensive holiday in Enontekiö and enjoy the remote environment of Lapland. You will find a wealth of real wilderness areas, especially in Malla Strict Nature Reserve. This wonderful reserve begins from Lake Kilpisjärvi and has an environment so delicate that movement is restricted. However, a marked path leads to the Three-Country Cairn where Sweden, Norway and Finland meet. The climb up Saana Fell is eased by steps on the steepest sections.
There are seasonal domestic flights to Enontekiö Airport, and you can also reach Heta by taxi from Kittilä Airport. Enontekiö has bus connections to Rovaniemi and Kolari, but the long distances make travel by car more attractive. Be careful when driving in wilderness areas, since the roads are sometimes tricky. Nonetheless, Enontekiö will reward any open-minded traveller with beautiful scenery and perfect natural peace.
