Duesseldorf City Hall

Duesseldorf City Hall which includes night scenes, heritage architecture and a city
The administrative heart of the city offers a variety of architectural styles and cultural attractions.

Strategically positioned in the centre of the old town, Dusseldorf’s City Hall, or Rathaus, actually comprises several different buildings, each with its own architectural style and atmosphere. One of the best ways to explore is by taking a free guided tour, where you can learn more about its fascinating history at the hands of an expert. The old town hall on the northern side of Marktplatz, the market place, dates from the second half of the 16th century. Designed by the celebrated Renaissance architect H. Tussmann, it is noted for its eye-catching clock tower. In 1749 the building was redesigned by Johann Joseph Couven, who added striking Baroque features including an ornate Rococo portal and balcony. In front of the building is a magnificent statue of Johann Wilhelm II. This popular elector was known affectionately by his citizens as Jan Wellem and his monument is one of the most important Baroque equestrian sculptures in northern Europe. It was created in 1711 by Gabriel de Grupello, the celebrated Flemish artist, whose Dusseldorf residence can be seen nearby. Today the remodelled, Neo-Renaissance Grupello House serves as the plenary hall of the administrative complex. The Marktplatz is the lively hub of the old town, where locals come to catch up with friends, enjoy a beer on one of the outdoor terraces, or snatch a few pleasant moments on the way to work or the shops. In the run-up to Christmas the historic buildings provide an atmospheric backdrop to the city’s popular Christmas market, where the heady scent of mulled wine mingles with the mouth-watering sizzle of fried sausages and brightly lit stalls sell local handicrafts, tree decorations and other seasonal goodies. The City Hall’s central location means it’s easily accessible from other landmarks such as the Hofgarten and the Rhine Promenade. There are tram and metro stops nearby. Opening times and details of guided tours are available from the official Dusseldorf tourism website.
