At this important historic building in the Old Town of Stralsund you can learn how merchants once lived and worked in the late Middle Ages.
Named after its Gothic hallway, the Dielenhaus in Stralsund is a fantastic example of the type of house that typically used to be inhabited by wealthy merchants. Stop by this attraction to stand in the same building that would have been an integral part of life centuries ago.
The Dielenhaus was renovated in the 1970s to turn it into a space for art exhibitions and wedding ceremonies, but the original structure dates back to the 14th century. Marvel at the Gothic architecture that was typical in North Germany at the time. Notice the symmetry of the brick work and the beautiful glass windows.
Outside the house, the number “3” and a sculpture let you know that you have arrived. One of the defining characteristics of the house is the large hallway and entry space. Take note of how wide the doors are and how much room there is to move around. This made it easier for merchants to store goods here and move them in and out of the building.
Wander around the main hall and picture the amount of beer that was once brewed here. Notice the surrounding architectural details and support mechanisms that ensured the heavy goods and barrels did not damage the structure.
Today, the Dielenhaus also preserves the history of Stralsund in another way. Tour the building and stop by each individual exhibition stall to see mini replicas of other historic Stralsund buildings. These beautifully crafted models depict various points in the area’s past.
Unless the Dielenhouse is booked for an event, entrance is free but donations are welcomed. Walk to the house to experience the stunning brick architecture of Stralsund’s Old Town, or hop on a bus from your accommodations to get there faster.
