"Been to Switzerland years ago and not too many little towns left. Cute area. The room was small (it is an old place). The traditionally swiss hotel. The bathroom was done over. Clean. Was just there 1 night, so was ok. Beds were hard and pillows flat. Had nice room though overlooking the front. Was quiet. Grounds are cute. You can eat outside in front or around the side. Restaurant downstairs was good. People were nice that worked there. We were off season, so not too many people in...

"Stayed 2 nights in the historic room located in the Lowen Haus that is stunning! Felt like I was in an Architecture Digest video. Service was excellent and so was dinner at the a la carte restaurant; I may even say I had the best meals by far during my 1 week in Switzerland. While the surrounding area is relatively quiet, location of the hotel is just a short walk from Gonten station which takes you to Appenzell town within 15 minutes. "Excellent, very helpful staff. A super room (we were upgraded) with sinks in the large bedroom and the WC. Up-to-date, but with beautiful wood joinery. Fine breakfast, with a gluten-free option. Elevator and library and a good location a few hundred yards from the main square. No restaurant, but there are many others nearby, including at their partner Hotel Romantic Santis on the main square. Has a same-day laundry service.
