Denver Museum of Nature and Science

From simple beginnings, this popular museum now houses spectacular exhibits, covering everything from the wonders of the earth to deep space exploration.

The origins of the Denver Museum of Nature & Science lie in a small log cabin in Breckenridge, Colorado. It was here that Edwin Carter, a pioneer and naturalist, began his collection of native wildlife which attracted such interest that his home quickly became known as the Carter Museum. This passion is the driving force behind today’s museum, which now includes exhibits from across the world and the universe beyond.

The Gems & Minerals exhibit will take you right back to Colorado’s mining roots. Discover an enormous crystallised nugget of gold weighing over 3.5 kilograms known as Tom’s Baby, unearthed in Breckenridge in 1887. Don your hard hat and head down into the Sweet Home Mine to marvel at the colourful crystal formations.

Head to the Prehistoric Journey gallery to travel back 3.5 billion years and learn all about the evolution of life. Watch out for the battling dinosaurs on your way through! Wildlife in today’s world is shown in all its glory and diversity with exhibits to be found across all three floors of the museum. Over 90 habitat scenes are depicted, showing the most fascinating animals from around the globe.

Don’t miss the chance to see a breathtaking 3D film at the IMAX theatre, complete with a four-and-a-half-story tall screen. Feel as though you are swimming with extraordinary marine animals in Deep Sea 3D, or set out on a voyage through space in Hubble 3D.

For space-related adventures, take a seat in the Planetarium, where shows featuring projection, video and surround-sound will unlock the wonders of black holes, the solar system and the Milky Way.

The youngest visitors are also catered for in the Discovery Zone. Here, there are plenty of interactive activities for small children, including digging for dinosaur bones, and science experiments.

The programme of exhibitions and films may vary, so do check the official website before visiting.

The Denver Museum of Nature & Science is located near the city centre. It is easily accessible by bus, or if travelling by car, there is free parking available.
