Cuenca Cathedral

Cuenca Cathedral
Admire the Gothic-style façade, the modern stained-glass windows and the ecclesiastical treasures of the adjoining museum of the city’s landmark church.

Also known as Cathedral of Santa María de Gracia, Cuenca Cathedral overlooks the city’s central Plaza Mayor square. Examine its eye-catching neo-Gothic triptych façade and discover the precious artworks and impressive architectural features of its interior.

The cathedral was originally built in the 12th and 13th centuries on the site of an old Moorish mosque. Though the current façade is Gothic in style, it is not the original but rather the result of an early 20th-century rebuild after it was severely damaged during a storm. Note how the top tier of the façade, which towers above the ceiling of the actual cathedral, gives the building the impression of being bigger than it actually is.

Venture inside the cathedral to see original features dating from its inception. Look for tombs holding the remains of the founding bishops and members of the once-powerful Montemayor family. Other highlights include the Renaissance-style Arco de Jamete arch, the 18th-century altar by Ventura Rodríguez and an intricately carved wood ceiling in the chapter house. Take time to appreciate the abstract stained-glass windows of the cathedral. These 20th-century additions stand out amid the older-looking sculpture and artworks.

Entry to the cathedral also includes admission to the adjoining Diocesan Museum, located in the old Palacio Episcopal (Bishop’s Palace). View altarpieces, tapestries, rugs, metalwork and liturgical objects as well as paintings by renowned Spanish artist El Greco, including the much-acclaimed Christ on the Cross.

The church also occasionally hosts special art exhibitions. In 2016, the church was the venue for a major show by high-profile Chinese artist Ai Weiwei. Masses are also held here.

Cuenca Cathedral is located on the central Plaza Mayor and is hard to miss. The church is open daily. An entrance fee is charged.
