The room was clean, spacious and the bed was comfortable. Staff were very friendly and helpful and had a lot of local information. It was great to have a kitchen, which had everything you need, to make your own food. Very easy transport links (bus stop right outside the hotel) and a good location; out of the city but close enough to walk in or catch a short bus ride. Very cheap accommodation, very good value for money - I would highly recommend this hotel.

It was okay. The hosts were nice and courteous, the room was clean and the bed was comfy. I think it should be mentioned that there will be loud music/karaoke almost every night as couldn’t sleep until after 11pm most nights, also there’s no glass in the window of the toilet so it’s pretty cold when you need to go, but can’t complain too much as it was very affordable to stay.
Great value for money. It's low budget accomodation similar to a private room in a hostel/backpackers. The rooms look to have been recently refurbished and are spacious with comfortable beds. You can walk into the city center in about 30-40 minutes, and there's ample off-street parking making it a good base to explore Christchurch from. Staff very friendly and accommodating
MJ was only too willing to answer my queries to make my stay an enjoyable experience, with many thanks.

It was a good stay but they did not say anything about how to get in after hours and we were stuck out side for half an hour til we finally found a note on a back door
We were so pleasantly surprised by our stay at The Black Horse!! Looks way nicer than the pictures and has such a lovely character. The rooms have all been recently renovated and we even got a sunny window which was nice to read your book in. Also there is a kitchen! So you can totally cook your own meals just like in a hostel. Such value for money!! Would so stay here again, thank you MJ for hosting us :)
This is basically a dive bar with hostel-style rooms on the second floor. Lots of loud highway traffic, generally seems to be in disrepair, and the bedspread had obvious stains on it (see photo). Definitely stay away.
Do not book this property, I booked and paid for two nights at this place on Christmas day and when I arrived it's was deserted and abandoned with not a single person onsite or anywhere. I have not been able to reach the owners of the hotel since then and it took me two hours on the phone to try and organise a refund,, there are uses needles everywhere and human leaves on the ground near the entrance and it's smells of curry. Worst experience of my life.
Bar below is fine for a drink, darts, and dirty looks. The room is uninhabitable, unless you like dirt, grime, and foreign chemical and biological substances on your surfaces. The place is old to begin with, but not kept up and dangerous. If you have children definitely look elsewhere.
Clean room also bathroom and toilet. The room had been newly renovated and had its own new sink. I was delighted to be able to use a well-equipped kitchen.
