Casement Park

Few sports are as identified with just one corner of Europe as Gaelic football and hurling. They are exciting, tough and unique games that are only really played in the Republic and Northern Ireland, and form a big part of the culture. This is why it is highly recommended that you try and catch a game if you’re in Belfast. Without a doubt, the best place to do that is at Casement Park.

Home to both the Antrim football and hurling teams, this is the quintessential Gaelic sport stadium. Opened in 1953, it’s the largest sports stadium in Ulster with a capacity of 32,000, rising to 40,000 after the proposed redevelopment that is taking place.

Visit on match days and this rickety old stadium comes to life with atmosphere and energy. The excitement of a game is contagious and you’ll soon find yourself shouting loud for the home team. Gaelic sports are tough and you’ll definitely appreciate being on the supporter side of the stadium, rather than on the pitch, but the commitment of the players is often matched by the dedication of the fans.

A visit to Casement Park, either on match days or just to see it, lets you get a glimpse of traditional life in Northern Ireland, before all the glitz and glamour of the Premier League and English football took over. This is the real sporting life here and well worth a visit when in the city.
