Colonial heritage, a pristine biosphere reserve and estuaries where flamingoes gather are some of the wonderful features of this northwestern section of the Yucatán Peninsula.

Translating to “Throat of the Sun” in Yucatec Maya, Calkiní is a municipality in the Mexican state of Campeche that abounds with outdoor adventures and sun-drenched settlements. Preserved wetlands near the Gulf of Mexico shelter colonies of pink flamingos and mangrove-studded waters. Visit Calkiní to explore colonial treasures and intriguing museums to learn about Calkiní’s rich history.

A good place to begin your exploration of Calkiní is in the municipal seat of the same name. Calkiní is a city that reveals a captivating tapestry of history to those who take the time to explore. Check out the imposing stone façade of the church San Luis Obispo, which dates back to 1548. The park fronting the church is a relaxing spot to sit and enjoy the views of the streetscape.

Venture to the municipality’s smaller towns and settlements to find more heritage landmarks. On the way to the village of Nunkiní you’ll find a remarkably intact hacienda dating back to the 19th century. The Hacienda Santra Cruz is a vivid red-and-white painted complex with a pretty chapel and central courtyard. Hacienda Tankuché exhibits architecture influenced by both French and medieval styles.

On the coast, make your way to the historic Isla Arena. Check out the museum dedicated to the Mexican actor and singer Pedro Infante. The museum is housed within the island’s historic lighthouse.

If the outdoors are more your thing, go kayaking from Isla Arena's pier or check out the island’s series of beautiful sandy beaches. Explore the Petenes Biosphere Reserve to discover the region’s rich wilderness. More than 150 species of birds inhabit these reserves. Check out the flocks of flamingos and pelicans that call these estuaries home. Try to spot the elusive caiman.

Travel the Ría Celestún by boat to delve deeper into its fascinating ecosystems, which include salty marshes and petrified forests.

Calkiní is located on the northern tip of the state of Campeche and the Yucatán Peninsula. The city of Calkiní is 60 miles (96 kilometres) from the state capital, Campeche. Join a guided tour of the region or discover the municipality’s enchanting towns and majestic landscapes for yourself.

"This property is older, not well maintained. The rooms do not lock properly, not secure at all. No TV. Poor to no internet service. The food was disappointing and expensive. Go into town to eat, I do not advise bringing food to cook in the units."
