Burg Lauenstein

Renovated to its former glory, this medieval castle contains a museum full of weapons and art and perches on a hill that crowns a quaint Upper Franconian village.

View the cone-shaped turrets and spires of the Burg Lauenstein rising high above a dense and colorful forest. The castle would not look out of place in a modern Disney film, but it dates back to the 12th century. It stands in a strategic position along the Franconian-Thuringian border and has passed through the hands of many ruling families.

Appreciate the Renaissance style of the corner towers, which were added in the 16th century. The entire complex was rebuilt and renovated in the late 19th century.

To look around the castle, join a guided tour of the complex. As you pass through, appreciate the art nouveau and historicist architectural features of the ornate Orlamünde Hall.

Stroll through the informative museum, which is filled with glass cases containing weapons and armor. You’ll also find period furniture, works of art and ceiling murals. Examine the various musical instruments, lamps and other items from a bygone era.

As you continue through the fortress, learn from the guide about its rich history and folklore. Legends say that the devil initially tore down King Konrad I’s construction every night after it was built. Come enjoy the celebrations during the Lauenstein Castle Festival on the fourth weekend of June in odd calendar years. The castle is also a popular destination for weddings.

To enter the castle, purchase a ticket at the entrance and ask for discounts for kids and families. The fortress is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday from morning to late afternoon, with longer operating hours in summer.

Burg Lauenstein stands between the towns of Springelhof and Lauenstein in the northern fringes of Bavaria, along its border with Thuringia. From Ludwigsstadt, ride a bus to a stop just 15 minutes away from the site on foot. You can also drive to the complex from the city in less than 10 minutes.

While here, make sure to see other nearby attractions such as the Lauenstein Playground, St. Nicholas Church and the Schiefermuseum.
