Berliner Philharmonie

Berliner Philharmonie
Receiving both architectural and acoustic acclaim, this concert hall in the Kulturforum district is the best place to see the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.

Take a seat in the large orchestra hall or experience an intimate performance in the chamber music hall at Berliner Philharmonie. This landmark venue has been the home of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra since the building’s completion in 1963. Experience the venue’s rich acoustics and admire its elegant architecture and pioneering concert-hall design.

Sitting on the edge of Berlin’s spacious Tiergarten Park, Berliner Philharmonie has an eye-catching design that is enhanced by its parkland surroundings. Check out the venue’s gold-toned asymmetrical façade, which was a gleaming beacon in the formerly isolated neighborhood near the Berlin Wall throughout the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s. After the fall of the wall, the venue crowned the central area now known as the Kulturforum.

Stroll through its grand tent-like front entrance and make your way through the elegant lobby. This lobby connects the Berliner Philharmonie’s two concert halls. If you are watching a larger orchestra performance or recital, you will enjoy the state-of-the-art facilities at the Großer Saal (Grand Hall). This venue has seating for 2,440 patrons and features an innovative vineyard-style seating arrangement. These rising terraces of seats encircle the central orchestra platform, allowing for pristine acoustics and excellent views throughout the hall.

If you are seeing a smaller concert or a performance of chamber music, you will be seated in the superb Kammermusiksaal (Chamber Music Hall). This smaller venue has 1,180 seats and was added to the facility in 1987.

Find out more about the Berliner Philharmonie’s intriguing architecture and acoustic design by attending a guided tour. These tours have a fee. They are held daily in English or German and run for about 1 hour. Purchase tickets to performances in the Berliner Philharmonie by going online or visiting the venue’s box office.

The Berliner Philharmonie is on the southern border of Tiergarten Park. Walk here in 10 minutes from Potsdamer Platz railway station. Be sure to check out the surrounding area to learn more about Berlin’s rich local culture and heritage.
