Surfing enthusiasts will be in heaven at this spectacular beach, renowned for its powerful waves blown in by pervasive winds.

The polar opposite of the calm, placid waters of its west-coast neighbours, this picturesque beach, located on the rugged east coast of Barbados, is home to foamy Atlantic breakers that smash against its shoreline, making it one of the island’s most popular spots for surfing. Boasting some of the most incredible scenery in the area, Bathsheba is dotted with unique rock formations and showcases a stunning natural backdrop.Experienced surfers come from far and wide to tackle the massive rolling waves that dominate the waters of Bathsheba Beach. A challenging and demanding surf, this area is not recommended for novice surfers due to the strong undercurrent and the coral reef boulders that lie beneath the water’s surface, so be sure you know what you’re getting yourself in for.If you decide the waves are too powerful for you, don’t despair – the scenery alone is worth the trip so sit back and watch the action as the warm breeze caresses your face and the tropical waters kiss your sand-buried toes. Be sure to bring your camera as you won’t want to forget the frothy, azure waters and the dramatic coastline studded with spectacular rock formations.Another stunning feature of this beach is the pools that are formed when the tide is out, culminating in a natural outdoor hot tub. In true paradise-fashion, have a soak in these tide pools under the shadow of the ancient boulders that are peppered around the beach. Bring a packed lunch with you and have a picnic on the beach or grab a snack at one of the cliff-top restaurants and marvel at the stunning ocean vistas. It’s a bit of a trek to get to Bathsheba: you can either take a taxi or hop on a bus from Bridgetown that departs and arrives every hour, on the hour. If you feel like making your own way there and renting a car, be aware that there are a number of rough, jagged roads sprinkled along the 19-kilometre drive. Parking is available but can fill up quickly so you are advised to get there early. Whatever way you choose to travel, rest assured that the journey will most certainly be worth it.
