Go whitewater rafting or water trekking on the Lima River, rest in the natural hot spring spas and admire a historic casino.

Bagni di Lucca is a quaint commune nestled in the emerald Tuscan hills that enclose the Lima Valley. It is known for its thermal baths and medieval vestiges, making it a relaxing and intriguing destination. Get a sense of the fascinating history here with a trip past the various ancient arches and bridges that decorate the area.

Take advantage of the natural hot springs with a relaxing stop at the Bagni di Lucca Thermal Spa. Its pools contain hot water with sulfate minerals that have been used for centuries for cures and treatments.

Glimpse the iconic Bagni di Lucca Casino, which also played a key role in the development and allure of the town. Snap photos of its yellow colonial façade, white columns and green shutters. After closing in 1953, it now hosts exhibitions and activities. Feast on an Italian-style picnic of farinata flatbread or baccalà dried cod in the Contessa Casalini Park.

For a change of scenery, hike along the banks of the scenic Serchio River. Encounter the Ponte della MaddalenaOpens in a new window a little southwest of the town and admire its exceptional design. This looping medieval structure, also known as the Devil’s Bridge, has one large arch adjacent to two smaller arches.

Challenge the Lima River with the guides from the Rafting H2O activity center. Go whitewater rafting for a thrilling afternoon with your family or friends. You can also try swimming and water trekking along the river as part of a tour. Expect warm to hot summers that remain fairly dry.

Find the commune on the Lima River that runs through its namesake valley. It is in the northern part of Italy, 70 miles (110 kilometers) northwest of Florence. Fly to Pisa International Airport and rent a car to drive north for about 40 miles (60 kilometers) and get to Bagni di Lucca in roughly 1 hour.

Bagni di Lucca is a blend of historic intrigue and relaxing thermal spas.

A very small town down in the valley surrounded by beautiful countryside. A good base to visit Lucca and Pisa - and Florence a bit further afield - and drive around the tiny hillside villages.
