Assen is the capital of Drenthe, a province in the northeast of the Netherlands, and a great holiday destination for young and old.

If the weather's bad, head for Bonte Wever, a tropical paradise with a wave generator, slide and separate wading pool. Kids will also love Ballorig, a huge covered playground not far from the city centre.
