Tour an ancient church, hike through the mountains and come face-to-face with colossal statues of kings when you visit this scenic town on Fuerteventura.

Antigua is an 18th-century town on the Spanish island of Fuerteventura. Located in the centre of the island, the town is surrounded by countryside and flanked by mountains. The beautiful scenery is just one of its many charms. See its historical buildings and cultural attractions and enjoy easy access to the coast. Step inside a windmill that is more than 200 years old, hike mountain valleys and have your photo taken next to giant statues of kings of ancient Fuerteventura.

Walk along the quiet streets to the Church of Cruz de los Caldos, which dates back to 1785. Outside the church is a small square filled with flowers and palm trees, a good spot to relax.

Stop at the Museo del Queso Majorero to learn about the making of Majorero cheese and operate a virtual milking machine. The site has a fully restored 19th-century windmill, which once ground the grain for the town. Step inside to see the original machinery. Buildings attached to the windmill have temporary art exhibits and the permanent collection of archeological objects from the Butihondo gully. Afterward, stroll among the indigenous plants of the centre's garden and purchase local artisan products in the shop.

For more natural beauty, explore the Cuchillos de Vigán natural monument, a series of dagger-shaped mountains. Between them are valleys with indigenous plants, marine fossils and rare raptor species.

Go to the Guise and Ayose Viewpoint for gorgeous views over the northern half of the island. See the two large bronze statues more than 15 feet (4.5 metres) tall, representing Guise and Ayose, two ancient kings of the island.

Although inland, Antigua is close to the sea. Drive about 20 minutes to reach Caleta de Fuste, a beach resort on the island's east coast.

To get to Antigua, fly into Fuerteventura Airport, about 14 miles (22 kilometres) from the city. Make the rest of the journey by taxi or rental car and enjoy the town’s history and scenic surroundings.

Our room needed refurbishing: deteriorated furniture and bathroom door. We were next to a service entrance on the ground floor and the noise started at 8:00am; thankful that they waited until then but we were on vacation and couldn’t sleep in. Meals and service were really good. Front desk and reservation ...

It was a nice stay. The beds were comfortable, however there are bugs everywhere in the room. The food was surprisingly ok, although at times hard and cold. This region is really close to the airport but the regular overhead traffic wasn’t intrusive.

I travel here alone about 4 times a year, have usually stayed in other hotels or private villas or apartments, Fuerteventura is home from home, but is known for the wind so if you want blazing heat go elsewhere

The area was quiet but had shopping areas and lots of choice for eating out. The hotels in the area are all along the beach area and they all looked nice.
