With a graceful shape inspired by the iconic dhow boats of the Middle East region, Al Janoub Stadium is a fantastic addition to athletic facilities in Qatar. The stadium’s opening in May 2019 for the Amir Cup Final set the stage for its role as a major events center during international soccer and other athletic competitions. Admire the gleaming white stadium from afar or visit for a an exciting game.
Look out to the sea to identify the shape of a dhow, used for fishing and pearl diving. The wide hull is pointed at one or both ends and made of cladded wooden planks. Imagine several of those dhows inverted side by side as you turn inland to look at the flowing curves of the roofline of the stadium.
A transparent covering lets plenty of light into the stadium while providing sustainably designed temperature control to make players and fans comfortable during games.
Note that the stadium, designed by architect Zaha Hadid, was constructed not only to serve tens of thousands of fans attending international events, but also for future use. When Doha’s Al WakrahSport Club professional soccer team plays here in national competitions, crowds will be smaller. The entire upper portion of the stadium will be removed, leaving the remaining stadium able to accommodate 20,000 people. Donating the removed seats for reconstruction in a developing country will help to expand the growth of soccer globally.
Travel by car to Al Janoub Stadium in Al Wakrah within 30 minutes from the Hamad International Airport or the Souq Waqif in Downtown Doha. Trains from the airport and city center take about 45 minutes. Enjoy the green spaces for other athletic activities that surround the stadium.
While in the Al Wakrah area, walk along the pretty waterfront corniche or shop or dine along the alleys of the local souq.
