What you can expect

  • Sanuki udon has a story that begins right here in Zentsuji, more than 1,200 years ago. Legend says the Buddhist monk Kobo Daishi (Kukai) brought the technique for making wheat noodles back from China and shared it with his hometown — and Sanuki udon has been Kagawa's pride ever since.

On this morning tour, you'll be guided by an officially certified “Udon Taxi Driver,” a rare local credential held only by drivers who have passed Kagawa's own udon knowledge exam. Before you set off, put on a traditional Shikoku pilgrim outfit — white robe, sash, and walking staff — for a memorable, photo-worthy start to the day.

Your first stop is Zentsuji Temple, the 75th temple of the 88-temple Shikoku Pilgrimage and the birthplace of Kobo Daishi himself. Spend about 25 minutes exploring its five-story pagoda and sacred grounds while your driver shares the temple's history and its deep connection to udon culture.

From there, it's a short drive to Miyagawa Seimenjo, a beloved local noodle factory where fresh udon is made the traditional way. Enjoy an authentic bowl of Sanuki udon for breakfast (approx. 400 yen, paid in cash on site) in a setting most visitors never get to see.

The tour wraps up by 9:00am, so it fits perfectly before a hotel check-out or an early train. Free Wi-Fi and Google Translate support are available on board, and your guide is happy to help however they can. You'll also receive an original “Udon Pilgrimage Log” as a keepsake of your morning in Zentsuji.

This is a small-group experience (up to 9 guests, minimum age 6), and pickup is arranged in the Zentsuji / Kotohira area.
