What you can expect

Begin your journey at the Old Fort (Ngome Kongwe), built by Omani Arabs in the 1700s. As you walk, your expert guide will explain how the city’s unique architecture was born from a mix of Swahili, Indian, and Arab influences. Stop to admire the legendary Zanzibar Doors—massive teak entrances carved with patterns representing the owner's status, wealth, and origin. Pass by the House of Wonders (Beit-al-Ajaib), once the grandest palace in East Africa and the first building on the island to have electricity.

Next, experience the energy of Darajani Market. Wander through aisles overflowing with fresh cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Watch the lively “fish auction” where the morning's catch is sold, and see how locals shop for colorful khangas (traditional textiles). Your guide will lead you to hidden squares where elders play Bao (a traditional board game) and children run through the alleys, giving you a glimpse into the authentic Zanzibar lifestyle.

The tour takes a poignant turn as you visit the Anglican Cathedral of Christ Church. Built directly over the site of the world’s last legally operating Slave Market, the cathedral stands as a monument to human resilience. Visit the underground chambers where captives were held and see the moving “Memory for the Slaves” sculpture in the courtyard.

As you wind back toward the seafront, pass the Freddie Mercury Museum, the childhood home of the Queen frontman, and the Forodhani Gardens. By the end of the walk, understand why Stone Town is considered one of the most significant cultural sites in the world.
