Embark on a 2-day, 1-night safari to Selous Game Reserve, now part of Nyerere National Park. This itinerary maximizes your time with a variety of activities that showcase the park's diverse landscapes and incredible wildlife.
Day 1: Arrival and the Classic Game Drive
Begin with an early morning flight from Zanzibar (approx. 30 minutes) or a road transfer from Dar es Salaam (approx. 4-7 hours), arriving at the park's airstrip or entrance. Upon arrival, transfer to your lodge or camp to check in and have lunch.
The core of your first day is a thrilling game drive in a 4x4 vehicle. Explore the park's varied habitats—open savannahs, woodlands, and wetlands—in search of wildlife. This is your best chance to see the “Big Four” (elephant, lion, buffalo, leopard) as well as giraffes, zebras, and the rare African wild dog, for which the park is famous.
Enjoy a hot lunch served at a set table in the middle of the bush, surrounded by nature. As the sun sets, return to your lodge or comfortable tented camp for dinner and a night's rest, often with the sounds of the African bush as your soundtrack.
Day 2: A New Perspective on the Wild
The second day is about shifting your viewpoint and exploring the park from a different angle. Begin with an early morning activity while the wildlife is most active. This could be a second game drive to spot predators returning from a night hunt or, in some packages, a guided walking safari accompanied by an armed ranger.
Return to the lodge for breakfast and prepare for the day's departure. A highlight of the Selous experience is a boat safari on the Rufiji River. This provides an intimate and unique perspective, allowing you to get close to pods of hippos, giant Nile crocodiles basking on the banks, and a spectacular array of birdlife.
After the boat safari, transfer back to the airstrip for your flight or begin your road journey back to the city, bringing your short but unforgettable safari to a close.
