Begin your adventure with a controlled rope descent into the darkness of Jomblang Cave. Once at the bottom, step into an ancient underground forest – a hidden ecosystem of giant ferns, moss-covered rocks, and towering trees that have grown in isolation for thousands of years.
The highlight comes around mid-morning when a single beam of sunlight pierces through the massive opening above, creating the famous “Light of Heaven” effect as it illuminates dust particles and mist in the cavern. It’s surreal, quiet, and feels like entering another world.
From Jomblang, continue through a 300-meter underground tunnel to Kali Suci, the Sacred River. Just a short drive away is Gunung Nglanggeran, an ancient volcano formed over 60 million years ago. Though inactive, its geology is unique: the slopes are covered in hexagonal andesite rock columns created by cooled lava, making the landscape look almost sculpted.
The trekking route to Nglanggeran’s summit takes 1–2 hours at a relaxed pace. The trail passes through local farms, forested paths, and open rock formations before reaching several viewpoints. Bukit Panguk is famous for its sunrise “sea of clouds,” while the main summit and Sunset Hill offer panoramic 360° views across Gunung Kidul, the Indian Ocean, and the surrounding hills.
Because Nglanggeran is an extinct volcano, the air is cooler, the vegetation is lush, and you can see the layered history of Java’s volcanic past in the rocks under your feet.
