Begin your experience near the Xi'an City Wall, one of the best-preserved ancient fortifications in the world, originally built during the Ming Dynasty (14th century). Depending on traffic and your preference, either ride along the wall on the spacious, tree-lined bike path that follows the perimeter, or cycle through the hutongs (old alleyways) just inside the wall, where daily life has continued for generations.

Along the way, pass ancient watchtowers and gates, traditional courtyard homes (siheyuan), local tea houses and small shops, and neighborhoods where old and new Xi'an live side by side. This is not a tourist bus route. This is how locals have moved through their city for decades — on two wheels, at a relaxed pace.

Next, learn about Chinese calligraphy (shūfǎ, 书法), which is not just handwriting — it is a visual art, a meditative practice, and a window into the Chinese soul. For over 2,000 years, calligraphy has been regarded as the highest form of Chinese art, on par with painting and poetry. Each brushstroke carries the energy (qi) of the artist. The way you lift, press, turn, and release the brush reveals your mood, your discipline, and your inner self.

In this class, learn to feel the brush, control your breath, and create balance on the paper. Learn how to hold the brush correctly (posture and grip), basic brushstrokes (horizontal, vertical, dot, hook, turn), the structure of one meaningful Chinese character (e.g., 安 — peace, 福 — good fortune, 永 — eternity), and the philosophy behind “empty and full,” “movement and stillness.”

By the end of the class, complete a piece of calligraphy on rice paper — ready to take home and frame.
