What you can expect

  • Leave the bright squares behind and follow the traces of those the city kept at arm's length: the executioner and the gravedigger, the women of the municipal brothel, and the men and women accused of witchcraft.
Travel back to a time when death was a constant neighbour. Walk through the Anger district and into the old Hackenviertel, where the narrow lanes still keep their shadows, and learn about the trades no honourable citizen would touch – and about the people who had no choice but to practise them.
Hear of gravediggers with spades across their shoulders and ravens circling above the burial grounds; of the executioner, feared and needed in equal measure; of omens, superstitions and the old legends that cling to these streets. Find out who ruled the lanes after dark, once the citizens had bolted their doors.
Stand at places that legend calls cursed, and learn what really happened there. The walk leads from the Frauenkirche to Sendlinger Tor, through the heart of the Hackenviertel – Munich by its shadow side.
The tour lasts about 2 hours.
