★What is Atami Geigi Kenban?
Atami Geigi Kenban is a cultural hub for traditional performing arts located in Atami City, Shizuoka Prefecture. It serves as a training ground where geigi (traditional female entertainers, similar to geisha) practice their art daily. Built in 1954, this historic building is now open to the public and has become a popular destination for visitors to experience geigi culture firsthand.
Atami is one of Japan’s most prominent hanamachi (geisha districts), home to about 50 okiya (geigi houses) and approximately 70 geigi. The Kenban is operated by a federation of these okiya and functions as a rehearsal space for dance and music performances.
