What you can expect
The Waterfall Circuit lies in a historic valley cherished by Rio de Janeiro’s residents since the 19th century. Today, it stands out as one of the highlights of the Transcarioca Trail, in the section that crosses the Serra da Carioca Sector within Tijuca National Park. Along the route, visitors will not only encounter waterfalls and natural pools but also remnants of old stone paving and ruins that reveal centuries of human presence in the region.
Many stretches of the Transcarioca Trail follow former rural roads created between the 17th and 19th centuries to transport agricultural goods. As you hike, you’ll see the remains of farms and sugar mills, water catchment systems, and aqueducts—structures that underscore the historical importance of these forests as vital water sources for the city. Some of these systems are still active today, helping supply water to nearby neighborhoods.
The forests of Rio de Janeiro are home to an impressive diversity of wildlife. Along the trail, it’s common to spot capuchin monkeys, marmosets, coatis, sloths, toucans, and a variety of other birds.
The park also shelters remarkable tree species such as jacarandas, cedars, jequitibás, jatobás, ipês, fig trees, and sapucaias, alongside a rich assortment of orchids, bromeliads, anthuriums, and lianas that characterize the lush Atlantic Forest.
The Waterfall Circuit features several waterfalls and refreshing natural pools, perfect for a swim surrounded by nature. Explore one of the major ecological hotspots in the heart of Rio’s South Zone and enjoy a truly unique experience in Tijuca National Park.
Enjoy hidden waterfalls, wildlife sightings, and stunning forest scenery with expert guides who bring Tijuca National Park’s history and nature to life.
