What you can expect

Begin your adventure with a scenic cruise across Lake Whakatipu aboard the iconic TSS Earnslaw. As you step off the vintage steamship at Walter Peak High Country Farm, you’ll be welcomed into a peaceful alpine setting that feels a world away from Queenstown.

Your guided horse trek starts right from the lakeside, with friendly, steady horses suited to all experience levels. Follow your guide along quiet trails that wind through rolling farmland and open tussock fields, offering spectacular views back across the lake and towards the surrounding mountain ranges. It’s a calm, unhurried ride designed to let you take in the scenery, breathe the fresh high country air, and enjoy the simple pleasure of being in the saddle.

Midway through your trek, pause for photos and take in the wide open landscapes that Walter Peak is known for. The pace is relaxed and the route is chosen to be comfortable for beginners while still rewarding for confident riders.

After returning to the stables, you’ll have time to explore the farm’s beautiful lakeside gardens and enjoy a moment to unwind before boarding the TSS Earnslaw for your return cruise to Queenstown. With a blend of gentle adventure, memorable views, and classic steamship travel, this is one of the most enjoyable ways to experience the charm and tranquillity of Walter Peak.

Please note: Minimum age 7 years and minimum height 120cms. A weight restriction of 95kg per rider applies. Maximum group size of 6.
