Discover history, art, and notable figures inside Reggio Emilia's Monumental Cemetery, a place rich in artworks and memories of famous local residents that we will rediscover together while wandering among truly remarkable tombs and burial sites, with curiosities, mysteries, and funeral anecdotes.
Thanks to Napoleon and the Edict of Saint-Cloud of 1804, cemeteries could no longer be located within cities, nor could churches serve as burial places, for reasons of hygiene and public decorum. It was in this climate of renewal that Reggio Emilia's great monumental suburban cemetery was established. In 1807, the municipality commissioned Domenico Marchelli to build it. He was the most fashionable architect in the provincial capital during those decades and was responsible for many works.
