The tour of the volcanic caves in Pucón is a short but very intense experience, ideal if you're interested in geology and adventure.
Where are they?
The volcanic caves are located in the Villarrica Volcano area, near the National Park, and were formed by ancient lava tubes that were left empty when the lava solidified on the outside and continued to flow inside.
Access: You can get there by walking along trails through native forest.
Cave entrance: It is usually narrow, and in some sections, you have to duck or proceed with caution.
Interior:
You walk through dark tunnels of volcanic rock.
The walls feature undulating textures, solidified gas bubbles, and black, reddish, and gray colors.
The temperature is cool and constant, even in the summer season.
Lighting: A flashlight or helmet with a light is used (usually provided by the guide).
Guide: Almost always with a guide, as the terrain can be uneven and slippery.
Difficulty level
Low to medium
No previous experience is required, but basic mobility is necessary, and participants should not be very claustrophobic.
Safety
Helmet
Flashlight
Gloves (sometimes)
Footwear with good grip
What makes it special?
You walk inside a volcano, past old lava flows.
Guides usually explain the eruptive history of Villarrica and how the caves were formed.
It is a very different experience from the typical hikes or hot springs in the area.
