What you can expect
Begin your experience with pickup from Beppu Station or your hotel in Beppu. Relax from the start without worrying about trains, buses, or schedules. A private driver and private vehicle are reserved exclusively for you, making this a very personal and unhurried journey.
During the drive, enjoy the scenery while listening to soft, calming music, creating a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. This tour is designed for travelers who prefer a slower pace and a more mindful way of exploring Japan.
At Usa Jingu, a local English-speaking guide will accompany you for approximately two hours, guiding you from the outer shrine areas to the main sanctuary (Upper Shrine). Learn about the basics of Shinto, Japan’s indigenous belief system, and the importance of prayer, nature, and harmony in Japanese culture.
The guide will also explain why Usa Jingu is regarded as the spiritual center of the Hachiman faith. Surrounded by ancient forest, the shrine grounds are quiet and deeply calming. There is time to walk the sacred pathways, take photos, and simply enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.
Try traditional experiences such as drawing an omikuji (fortune slip) and learning the proper way to pray at a Shinto shrine. If you wish, you can participate in a formal Shinto prayer ceremony (optional, ¥5,000). Prayers are commonly offered for health, work, family, safety, and important life transitions. In Shinto, prayer is not about asking for miracles, but about aligning yourself with positive energy and good fortune.
If scheduling allows on weekdays, you may also add a short traditional Usa candy-making experience. Usa is known for its gentle sweets made from soft mizuame (Japanese malt syrup) with fruit flavors. This simple experience offers a warm introduction to local food culture.
After the main tour, you may stop at a local café or enjoy a relaxed lunch break. If you are interested, it is also possible to visit the Ajimu Wine Area, which is best accessed by private vehicle.
