What you can expect
Begin your day with a visit to Miyahara, a beautifully preserved building near Taichung Railway Station. Once nearly abandoned, it has been revitalized by the renowned pastry brand Dawncake, blending its original structure with modern design elements. Spend 40 minutes exploring this iconic flagship store.
Next, head to CMP Calligraphy Greenway for lunch (at your own expense). Situated along Gongyi Road, this shopping complex was transformed from a semi-abandoned parking structure into a building that harmonizes with its natural surroundings. Admire the lush greenery that extends across the building’s façade, creating Taiwan’s first large-scale vertical garden.
Continue to the National Taichung Theater, a world-class performing arts venue designed by Pritzker Prize-winning Japanese architect Toyo Ito. Explore the theater’s three professional performance halls, multifunctional space, outdoor plaza, open-air theater, and rooftop sky garden.
Then, visit the vibrant Rainbow Village, originally known as Gan Cheng Sixth Village. Thanks to Mr. Huang, a veteran who transformed the area with his colorful paintings, it has become Taiwan’s one-of-a-kind rainbow village. Stroll along the 150-meter alley, where every surface is covered in vibrant, playful artwork.
Next, head to the Luce Memorial Chapel, a striking architectural landmark designed by renowned architect I. M. Pei. Admire the chapel’s unique design, which features a hyperbolic paraboloid roof and a serene, minimalist interior.
Finally, visit the Gaomei Wetlands, a vast wetland located on the southern side of the Dajia River estuary. Walk along the wooden boardwalk, which allows visitors to enjoy the wetlands while preserving the natural habitat. As the sun sets, watch the sky turn a glowing orange, creating breathtaking views of the towering wind turbines.
