Tranquil Toyama: A Guided Art & History Walk
Discover the soul of Toyama on this curated, slow-paced journey. From the architectural brilliance of Kengo Kuma to the historic merchant streets featured in The New York Times, join a friendly local guide for a serene day of culture, art, and timeless beauty.
9:00 AM | A Modern Start with a Touch of History
Our journey begins at Toyama Station, the heart of one of Japan’s premier “Compact Cities.” We will hop onto the sleek, futuristic Light Rail Transit (LRT)—a symbol of Toyama’s urban innovation. Our first stop is Toyama Castle Park. Surrounded by a peaceful moat and lush greenery, the castle’s stone walls offer a quiet moment to reflect on the region’s samurai heritage before we transition into the city’s modern artistic landscape.
10:00 AM | Architectural Wonder at TOYAMA KIRARI
A short walk brings us to the Toyama Glass Art Museum, housed in the “TOYAMA KIRARI” building. Designed by the world-renowned architect Kengo Kuma, this masterpiece features a breathtaking atrium crafted from local cedar, glass, and aluminum. As sunlight filters through the soaring wooden slats, you’ll feel as though you are walking through a sun-drenched forest. The museum celebrates Toyama’s “City of Glass” legacy with world-class contemporary exhibits that transcend language barriers.
11:30 AM | A Moment of Zen at the Canal Side
Next, we head to Fugan Unga Kansui Park, a stunning waterfront oasis. Here, you will find what has often been called the “most beautiful Starbucks in the world.” This isn't just a coffee break; it’s a sensory experience. Relax on the terrace with a drink in hand, overlooking the calm canal and the majestic Tenmon-kyo Bridge. The park’s elegant scenery offers the perfect “Tranquil Toyama” photo opportunity.
2:00 PM | Iwase: The Hidden Gem Featured in The New York Times
In the afternoon, we take the tram north to Iwase, a nostalgic port town that played a pivotal role in the “Kitamaebune” sea trade during the Edo and Meiji eras. Recently, Toyama was selected by The New York Times as one of the “52 Places to Go,” with special recognition given to the revitalized charm of Iwase.
As we stroll through streets lined with historic merchant estates, you will see how tradition meets modern creativity. We will visit the Masuizumi Sake Brewery, where ancient warehouses have been transformed into stylish galleries, craft workshops, and tasting rooms. This area perfectly captures the spirit of the NYT’s praise: a place where historic architecture is breathed with new life by local artisans and brewers. It is the perfect, quiet finale to our exploration of Toyama’s enduring soul.
Transportation costs will be at the guests’ own expense.
