What you can expect

Step inside Food House Mostar and straight into the heart of Bosnian home cooking.

Your cooking instructor welcomes you with a glass of rakija, local wine, or a non-alcoholic beverage and a generous spread of traditional meze — smoked meats, fresh cheese, ajvar, and seasonal bites. This is how every Bosnian gathering begins: around a table, with something to eat and a story to share.

Once you are settled, the hands-on cooking starts. You will work with fresh, locally sourced ingredients to prepare three of Bosnia's most iconic dishes completely from scratch.

First up: burek. You will learn to stretch paper-thin sheets of dough by hand — the traditional technique passed down through generations of Bosnian home cooks — then layer and fill them to create the country's most famous pastry.

Next, you will prepare dolma and japrak, carefully stuffing vegetables and vine leaves with a seasoned rice and meat filling. Finally, you will mix and shape hurmasice, a syrup-soaked semolina dessert that rounds out every Bosnian celebration.

Your instructor guides every step with clear, easy-to-follow directions and shares the shortcuts and tricks that make these recipes work in any kitchen. No prior cooking experience is needed — the class is designed so complete beginners feel confident and experienced cooks pick up new techniques.

Vegetarian and vegan alternatives are available, so everyone gets a full hands-on experience regardless of dietary preferences.

When the cooking is done, everyone sits down together for a full three-course lunch made entirely from what you have just prepared. Wine and rakija flow freely throughout — this is Bosnia, after all.

Before you leave, you will receive a printed recipe booklet covering every dish from the class so you can recreate them at home. No specialist equipment required — just the skills and confidence you have built during the session.

Whether you are travelling solo, as a couple, or with family, this class is a genuine window into the flavors, traditions, and warmth of Bosnian hospitality. The class usually takes place at Food House Mostar but may occasionally be held at Timber & Stone Tavern or another nearby venue. Regardless of the cooking location, your meeting point is always Food House Mostar — your instructor will greet you there and take you to the cooking venue.
