Private Serra da Estrela Experience – Tower & Covão d’Ametade
This private experience through Serra da Estrela, Portugal’s highest mountain range, is designed for travelers who value time, comfort and a more thoughtful way of exploring, away from rushed itineraries and large tour groups.
Your day begins at 09:30, meeting your guide/driver before departing from Covilhã toward the heart of the mountain. Traveling on the Covilhã side of the range, we make our first stop at the Varanda dos Carqueijais viewpoint, where sweeping views over the Cova da Beira valley offer a memorable introduction to the landscape.
As we continue upward, the route passes through Penhas da Saúde and reaches the high plateau area of Piornos. Here, you will have time to contemplate the vast Nave de Santo António, the Covão do Ferro Dam, and Poio do Judeu, natural features shaped by ancient glacial activity. These stops are carefully chosen to allow appreciation of the scenery without unnecessary crowds.
Next, we stop at Nossa Senhora da Boa Estrela, a symbolic and peaceful place. Nearby, you can see the Cântaro Magro and the impressive Zêzere Glacial Valley, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Portugal, a highlight for nature lovers and photography enthusiasts.
The journey continues to the Tower, the highest point in mainland Portugal. Rather than rushing, time here is managed strategically, allowing you to enjoy the surroundings and visit traditional mountain shops, where you may taste and discover local Serra da Estrela products.
Descending toward the Manteigas side, the landscape changes dramatically. The road follows the contours of the glacial valley, offering unique perspectives over one of Portugal’s most remarkable natural formations.
One last highlight is the stop at Covão d'Ametade, a peaceful and iconic spot where the River Zêzere rises. Surrounded by the Raso, Gordo and Magro waterfalls, this area invites you to explore at a leisurely pace, take short walks and enjoy moments of peaceful connection with nature.
Throughout the tour, the itinerary is adjusted according to conditions and traffic flow, always prioritising the best times to enjoy each location. This experience is ideal for couples, families and small groups looking for a peaceful, private and authentic way to discover Serra da Estrela.
After a few hours of exploration, we will return comfortably to your accommodation, concluding the tour.
