You don’t need to be a certified diver in order to experience water at its clearest! Snorkeling at Silfra is suitable for anyone who feels comfortable in water and knows how to swim. This family-friendly activity is suitable for children from 12 years old.

The snorkeling tour of Silfra is done in a dry suit, helping you to stay warm and dry inside the suit while swimming in the cold, crystal clear water.

Silfra is located in Thingvellir National Park which is a Unesco heritage site. The beautiful park is one of the wonders on the famous Golden circle route.

Know before you book

  • Not recommended for pregnant travelers
  • Not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health
  • Suitable for all physical fitness levels
  • All participants will need to fill out a medical form before participating in the tour. Please contact local operator in order to request the form via email.
  • All participant's height, weight and age information must be provided to local operator to ensure they bring the best fitting drysuit. The tour operator will contact you after booking to ask for this information.
  • Participants must be at least 12 years of age
  • Dry suits are worn over your own clothing. We recommend wearing long thermal underwear and thick wool socks as a base layer under the dry suit
  • Minimum height is 4ft 11in (150cm). Minimum weight is 100lbs (45kg).
  • Maximum height and weight is 6ft7in (200cm) and 264lbs (120kg).
  • Participants must be comfortable in water and able to swim, physically fit and healthy
  • Please note that that dry suits can sometimes feel quite tight and constricting
  • All participants must be able to communicate in English
  • Not suitable for pregnant women
  • IMPORTANT: All participants over 60 years of age must have their doctor sign the approval form

Activity itinerary

If you choose a tour with transportation, we will pick you up from your accommodation in Reykjavík and drive you to Thingvellir National Park where Silfra is located, about an hour's drive from Reykjavík. The tour is approximately 5 hours from the time of pick up in Reykjavík to the time of drop off. You can also choose to drive yourself to Silfra. Please follow the directions here: https://www.dive.is/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/Silfra-meeting-point-in-Thingvellir.jpg.  Upon arrival at Silfra, your guide will give you your dry suit and snorkeling equipment, and explain how to use this equipment. The guide will also give you advice on how to stay warm and comfortable during your 30 to 40 minute snorkeling tour of the Silfra Hall, Silfra Cathedral, and Silfra Lagoon sites. All participants need to have read and signed the Snorkeling Silfra Medical Statement(view here: https://www.dive.is/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Silfra-snorkeling-medical_Final.pdf ) and sign our liability release form at the start of the tour (view here: https://www.dive.is/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/AA_LIABILITY_SNORKELING_2016.pdf ) After the tour we warm up with hot chocolate and cookies.
