What you can expect
In recent years, the teachings of Zen meditation (zazen) have become increasingly well-known around the world. However, there are surprisingly few places where one can experience authentic zazen.
This tour offers a true digital detox and Zen experience—an immersive overnight stay at Shogakuji Temple, a Soto Zen temple nestled deep in the mountains about two hours from Tokyo. Over the course of two days and one night, participants can fully engage in traditional Soto Zen practices surrounded by rich natural beauty.
Located in a quiet mountain village far removed from the bustle of Tokyo, yet still conveniently accessible, this temple stay is an ideal introduction to Zen practice. Situated in the outskirts of Hannō City in Saitama Prefecture, the temple is surrounded by lush, forested mountains. By day, the sounds of birds, flowing rivers, and mountain breezes create a peaceful atmosphere; by night, the star-filled sky offers a breathtaking view. In the summer, the area is even referred to as “the Karuizawa of Saitama” thanks to its refreshing coolness.
During your stay, you’ll follow the same practices as Zen monks: sitting meditation (zazen), sutra copying (shakyō), and enjoying tenzo ryōri, traditional vegetarian temple cuisine.
You will practice zazen twice—once in the evening and once in the morning. For beginners, the head monk will guide you through the basics of posture and breathing. Facing the natural world outside, you’ll practice Shikantaza—a Soto Zen method of meditation focused solely on sitting and clearing the mind. In this way, you aim to become one with the sounds of nature: birdsong, the river, the wind.
Both dinner and breakfast are tenzo ryori, or traditional shojin ryori (vegetarian temple cuisine). In Zen tradition, the tenzo (head cook) prepares meals with the belief that when the hearts of the cook and the eater are aligned in gratitude, even silent ingredients can be spiritually fulfilled.
As an optional feature, you can hand over all digital devices—smartphones, computers, etc.—at check-in to enjoy a complete digital detox experience.
The tour price includes transportation, lodging, and all meals.
You’ll also have access to a bath in the evening for full physical and mental relaxation.
