Nestled in the Musashino forest just outside Tokyo, Heirinji Temple transforms into a living masterpiece every November. Over 100 species of maple trees line the sacred grounds, creating one of the most spectacular koyo (autumn foliage) experiences in the Kanto region — without the crowds of Nikko or Kyoto.
Why Heirinji in Autumn?
Most visitors to Tokyo miss this hidden gem entirely. While Nikko and Kyoto overflow with tourists every November, Heirinji offers the same breathtaking fall colors in a genuinely peaceful Zen setting. The temple's vast forested grounds — rare for the greater Tokyo area — mean you can stroll unhurried beneath a canopy of fiery red, orange, and gold.
The Temple
Heirinji is a Zen temple dating back to the Muromachi era, one of the most important Rinzai Zen temples in eastern Japan. As you pass through the grand Sanmon Gate, the atmosphere shifts — the noise of the city disappears, replaced by the rustle of leaves and the stillness of centuries-old trees.
Highlights include:
Momiji Valley — the crown jewel of Heirinji's autumn foliage, best in mid to late November
Maple-lined paths glowing red, orange, and gold at every turn
Butsuden (Main Hall) and the serene Hojo Garden, beautifully framed by autumn colors
Matsudaira Clan Cemetery, resting place of feudal lords, wrapped in fallen leaves
Ten Tomb Pilgrimage route — a quiet, contemplative walk through history
☕ Forest Café: Hirune no Mori Chuei
After your autumn walk, warm up at Hirune no Mori Chuei — a hidden teahouse-style café nestled in the woods, just a short walk from the temple. Enjoy seasonal tea, handmade Japanese sweets, or a light bowl of soba or udon surrounded by tall trees. This peaceful stop perfectly complements the Zen spirit of the temple — ideal for quiet reflection or capturing the perfect autumn photo.
Getting There
Heirinji is just 30 minutes from Ikebukuro by train — easy to reach, yet feels a world away from central Tokyo.
This is not just a temple tour. It's autumn in Japan, the way it was meant to be experienced.
